TS2, the "Tradeshow, Tradeshow".

It has been eight years since I last attended TS2 (the tradeshow, trade show).

Ten years ago it was a dying show put on by the TSEA (Trade Show Exhibitor's Association), and when I last attended I had decided that even if the show was free for me to attend, it wasn't even worth my time as an expense...

The show is under new management and they assured me that THIS year it was finally worth my energy...

Having just returned from Boston and the 2010 TS2 show everyone in the industry is asking me if things have changed at TS2. Well, Yes, and no...

First the negative spin: The show's attendance is still way down from 10 years ago, the exhibit hall is small, and the "buzz" on the show floor is a bit subdued. Speaking with other exhibitors the lead-count was minimal and the "energy" seemed low.

And now, the positive spin: Since the tradeshow industry is also beginning to pull-out from the recession, of the few leads that were there on the tradeshow floor, ALL of them were QUALITY leads! If you are used to seeing hundreds of leads per show and maybe a "sale" or two, you'll be extremely pleased to know that the "sales" are still there. but remember those 100's of leads you used to have to sift through after the show? They are now just dozens of leads... The up-shot to this is that there are less "riff-raff" leads to comb through to find the gems or the HOT leads!

So, with a shorter stack of leads in my hands from this year's show I have to ask myself, "would I exhibit at TS2 again"? If I could repeat (or exceed) 2010's TS2 results, yes!

Way to go TS2, I hope to see you again in 2011.

Optimism... Bullish outlook... And, the light at the end of the tunnel...

It has been success story after success story for tradeshows since the beginning of the year...

In EVERY convention Corporate-Fx has performing our magic at, attendance across EVERY vertical market and in ALL industries, has been UP from the past two years. Plus, the QUALITY of the prospects in attendance are at an all-time high for tradeshows as a whole!

This year's DAC (Design Automation Conference) was no exception! Oh sure, the first day is always good, but days two and three kept the crowds surging and the sales interest high!

This year Corporate-Fx was again working with Prolific, Inc talking about their leading edge IC design and optimization software. And, WE are happy to say that in all the years that they have been exhibiting at DAC, 2010 was the BEST EVER!

As a direct result of the non-stop crowd-draw with our custom "Theater-Style" illusion, Prolific had a RECORD number of requests for follow-ups by a sales person... And, tradeshow FIRST at DAC: they even SIGNED a deal on the show-floor! That has NEVER happened before or since the recession...

For trade shows it's official, we are entering a new era of attendance, interest and prosperity...

Ok, so I speak for a living... I am a "professional" speaker after-all... But, this was the first time I had spoken to my "peers" at the Exhibitor Show (a tradeshow about tradeshows) as part of the official teaching faculty.

I have to admit I was a little nervous about meeting all of the CTSM educational requirements and regulations. I needed to deliver solid and useful information while maintaining a professional distance from my subject matter so that I wouldn't sound like I was trying to "advertise" my business of tradeshow magic...

My topic was titled: "Aisle-View: The Low Cost, Live Presentation Option". I knew I could speak with authority on the subject (Funny, I invented, and published the term "Aisle-View" presentations way back in 1999), None the less, I'm human and I was just a tad bit worried about my faculty evaluation score.

The great news is that my over-all score was an incredibly high 4.83 out of 5 (the conference average for other speakers was only 4.38)!

And my student quotes were enough to make even a boiled lobster blush:

“Again, one of my favorite electives!”

“Scott is an excellent speaker and knows his subject well. I really thought that this course may be an advertisement, but to my surprise, he presented a very balanced view of do it yourself and hire a professional.”

NAB 2010 in Las Vegas!

80,000 attendees? YES! You bet that the National Association of Broadcasters was filled with excitement in Las Vegas this year. It has been several years since we have seen such large crowds at the NAB.

Every magic show that I did with Isilon was PACKED. Funny, we started with just 12 chairs and by the time we got to the BIG illusion the folks standing in the back could hardly see me due to the size of the mobs!

As the other exhibitors tried to attract attention with just another implementation of 3D-TV, Isalon stood out from the pack with "REAL- LIVE-D" entertainment, (me). Using Corporate-Fx magic not only made their sales message memorable but it was a totally unique live
experiance in the hall as well.

I'm looking forward to the IBC show in Amsterdam this fall, and I'm crossing my fingers that the Iceland Volcano will be long gone by then. Cuz an ash spewing volcano is the only thing that can hold these crowds back from the magic of Isilon...

Last week was a BUSY week for Corporate-Fx! With both the RSA (Computer Security) tradeshow and the HIMSS (Healthcare Information) conventions going at the same time, we had just about every magician in our group performing! Clearly, tradeshow marketing is rebounding from the recession and exhibiting is again an important part of corporate brand identity, new customer acquisition and public relations.

Corporate-Fx is more than simply a "magician" with a pack of cards pulling crowds to a booth just for entertainment's sake... The New York Times today ran an extremely interesting article called "The Convention Crashers". http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/16/business/16shows.html?pagewanted=1

The article focuses on vendors who set up shop in a hotel suite near a trade show site to promote their products without paying for official exhibit space on the tradeshow floor.

Since the economic downturn companies have been looking for a way to achieve the effectiveness of meeting customers and prospects in a live industry setting, but they have been reducing their tradeshow budgets... Obviously, "outboarding" a tradeshow reduces the show organizer's profit potential and floor space sales. What will the show organizers do, and how can they regain control? I highly recommend this article, it could be a sign of the next big change in the tradeshow industry...

Tradeshows and a "Magical" New Year!

..."The '00s: Goodbye (at Last) to the Decade from Hell" (from Time Magazine, November 24th, 2009)...

Really? A decade from hell? Even in our worst economy since the great depression, looking back, this past year wasn't all bad...

Sure, we lost some good friends and clients to mergers, acquisitions and failures, but we also added several brand-new clients and members to our tradseshow magic group!

In December, all of the news organizations share highlights from "the year that was", I thought Corporate-Fx should do the same for OUR year...

The good news is that 2010 is pre-booking fast, and looking WAY better than the last year for the entire tradeshow industry.

CES 2009 "Demos that rock"

January, (Las Vegas): We did it once again! Even the trade publications listed the SanDisk Consumer Electronics Show "Theater-Style" magic presentation the "Super-Star of the South Hall".

Tech-EM said "If you're a CES regular, you'll recognize SanDisk's perennial presenter and magician, Scott Tokar. April, (Chicago): Cisco's Healthcare magic presentation concluded this year with an escape from within a locked steel box on the tradeshow floor. Corporate-Fx explained how Cisco helps hospitals around the world "escape" the typical limitations of communications and information technology within the privacy regulations of HIPPA compliance.

Best of all, Cisco loved the show so much they asked to book the 2010 HIMSS show right there on the spot!

16 years of Sun Microsystems Magic!

October, (San Francisco): This year marked our 16th consecutive year at Oracle Open World with Sun Microsystems! The Corporate-Fx Magic Group must have been doing something right to earn Sun's repeat bookings again and again, all these years!

It has been an amazing ride to be Sun's official tradeshow spokesperson and magician. During the ramp-up of the famous "dot-com" boom in the early 90's, with the internet "information" explosion, along the technology stock "bubble" and "bust", and then back-up the IT-ladder in the 00's... And today, even with the looming acquisition of Sun by Oracle, Corporate-Fx has brought the fun, the excitement and the "buzz" to the tradeshow floor with brand new illusions and eager crowds chalanging us to out-do the spectacular of the last year's performance... Campus Management at Educause Denver.

Last week I had the pleasure once again to work with Campus Management Corporation at EDUCAUSE 2009 in Denver. This was Corporate-Fx's third convention with them this year.

Our goal was to perform a fun and educational "Theater-Style" tradeshow magic presentation and then turn the crowd over to the guest speaker on the stage for a more traditional (but well attended) industry talk.

Typically, a power-point driven "industry expert" type talk would only draw 8 to 10 attendees (with the promise/bribe of receiving a T-Shirt at the end of the talk). But, each time we started our show with trade show magic the entire exhibit was full with eager and attentive prospects! And a full exhibit with excited and eager prospects has a way of standing out on the tradeshow exhibit floor...

Oh shoot... Why am I trying to tell you this? Let me show you what our customer had to say to us in an email we received today!

"EDUCAUSE 2009 was an exceptionally strong show for us, the best I’ve been a part of in the five years I’ve been here. We expect meaningful activity in every sales territory as a result. Scott, you drew a crowd each hour and during the last presentation before the close at 4:00PM, we had an unprecedented 60-70 people in the booth. The sales team reported 3 solid leads from just this one session and we exceeded our (expanded) lead goal by 15%, fantastic results!" - Patsy Canning, Corporate Event Manager for Campus Management.

w00t! ~ a commonly used word on the internet. It's used to express joy during success or victory, or to indicate that you've found something.

This week, at NACAC (The National Association for College Admission Counseling) conference in Baltimore, Campus Management Corp used the word w00t for the first time!

The first day included the evening cocktail hour on the tradeshow floor, and by the time the hall closed, CMC had exceeded the expected lead count for the entire show!

NACAC is the type of tradeshow where one quality sales lead could make the show a success. And once again CMC exceeded their expectations on-site!

What a great sales team to work with, and what an awesome product for higher education institutions!

Kudos...

It's always nice to hear "Great job" right after a show... But, I always wonder if the complement was said in the heat of the moment after being amazed by a magic trick or if it was truly deserved in the long-run.

Well, one full week after the show I just received these wonderful snippets in an email from Alex Kostenko, the Events Manager for Isilion Systems... Talk about Kudos, I'm blushing!

"The show was slower this year due to the economy, but the traffic at our booth has never been busier, thanks to your incredible magic!...We are more than halfway to reaching our lead goal for the entire show just after the FIRST DAY of the event! and ...You make my job so much more easier and fun and you make me look good!"

There are only so many ways I can tell a potential customer that Corporate-Fx works... And, it always sounds like we are "blowing our own horn" especially when we say it about ourselves... I just thought it would be nice to share with you the feedback from a real customer!

European audiences know how to appreciate trade show magic!

I just returned from Amsterdam last week where I was performing for Isilon Systems at the IBC (Broadcasting) convention. And I must say, I simply love the European audiences!

Sure, magic attracts big crowds in the USA, but in Europe my crowds are HUGE!

Maybe it's because my style of tradeshow magic is so unique there... Or perhaps it's my American accent... I'm not sure, but I can report that the IBC attendees truly love magic, and they stayed in the Isilon exhibit to savor the entire experience (sales pitch and all)! In fact, EVERY exhibitor that saw me perform asked me for my business card... WOW, I'd love to see that in the US!

Question: Have you ever sat through a 3 hour French dinner? Had time to savor every morsel and enjoyed the company you are with? Well, this is the way my magic was received at the IBC tradefair! AWESOME! Did I say I LOVE European audiences?

The best part of MY experience??? Isilon promptly ordered desert (they immediately booked me for their next tradeshow)! Sweet!

Pack up those playing cards, because now I'm off to Baltimore, MD for my next show! The NACAC for Campus Management Systems!

Economic optimism!

Wow! It feels like I have traveled back in time to 2007! The show floor at this year's VM World in San Francisco was JAMMED with attendees and exhibits!

I am so happy that we seem to be over the "economic slow-down" in the marketing circles that were affecting conventions and meetings. After all, optimism is good for everybody's bottom line...

Give-aways, live presenters, contests, models, and of course magicians are all in high gear on the tradeshow floor once again. However, the only problem is that a few booths here have indeed down-sized their presence as a knee-jerk reaction to THEIR (perceived) "recession". Analysts tell us that the economy is on the mend now, but some of these companies are sending out a "thrift" vibe instead of sending out a "spend" vibe!?!

Think about it, these exhibits can't afford to look like they are in tough times when they are looking for new customers to spend real money on their newest products. Especially when their competition looks fresher, increasingly dynamic, and simply more optimistic about future sales (just because their booth was cleaner, more active and energetic)!

Hmmmmm, my Dad always used to say; "if you want to be successful you've gotta' look successful!"

Thankfully Isilon Systems understands this, and with the help of Corporate-Fx they saw record sized crowds and an amazing lead count! Plus, their nearest competition was suffering from a "down-sized" marketing budget vibe allowing Isilon to multiply the effectiveness of their exhibiting dollar!

Way to go Isilon! And, welcome back optimism!!!

Magic Live, a trade show about magic for magicians.

Tradeshows are first and foremost about a trade... And, my trade happens to be magic.

So this week I am at the Magic Live Convention in Las Vegas. Every exhibit is focusing on magic and illusion. Card tricks, mind reading tricks, and even a helicopter hanging from the ceiling!

Sometimes in this profession you need to make a rabbit appear, and sometimes a full size helicopter! Well, this is the place to learn about all your magic options.

As a blog entry I'd love to tell you more about the exhibit hall, the booths and the lectures, however, this IS a magic convention and a magician NEVER reveals his secrets. But, next time you see me in person perhaps I'll tell you some more about it ;-)

The "recession" has finally done it... Brought back customer service and heart-felt appreciation to the frequent fliers in American Airlines AAdvantage program!

As a tradeshow magician I have to travel for a living, and my almost 2-million lifetime miles are mostly on American. Through thick and thin, boom and bust my frequent flyer card has gotten a work-out as I have stayed with American all these years!

There used to be a day when a "premier" customer always received "premier service" and respect... But, after the dot-com bust, that "respect" had been waning... Sure, I have always used the first-class check-in, upgrade privileges, and increased baggage allowance given to me by my flyer status, but something in simple human compassion and personal respect had gone missing over these last few years...

...On my "puddle jumper" flights from SNA to SFO this week something changed... On both flights (out and then home) the flight attendants addressed me by name, asked me if I needed anything, and then they gave me a free snack (the snack you usually pay a few bucks for from the beverage cart)... And you know what? I actually felt special and appreciated in-flight once again!

Recognizing your best and most frequent customers simply makes sense... After all, this small group of customers are the company's prime source of revenue. Good will and a positive experience can only help build business in a thin economic climate...

And as a great side benefit, these customers may even tell their friends about how happy they are with the company... And, those customers may even blog about it (like this) creating positive buzz and free advertising!

I sure hope THIS recession trend stays with us! And, I can only hope it catches on in other businesses as well.

This week I'm in San Francisco at the DAC (Design Automation Conference) once again! Now my 8th year at this convention I'm right at the front entrance of the North Hall in the Prolific Exhibit.

Sure, the over-all attendance down this year (just as in all tradeshows recently), but Prolific has a large, interested and active crowd every time we start a show.

What is the best part about doing a "Theater-Style" show at the main entrance? Without a doubt the Prolific exhibit is THE most visible and memorable booth on the convention floor! In addition, while other companies cut back on budgets Prolific is getting a bigger "bang-for-the-buck", and creating a positive "buzz" that will be remembered for years to come! Plus, it's just plain FUN to perform for such an appreciative crowd...

Man, I love my job!!!

In today's electronic world video recorders are as common as still cameras... And now with such small HD cameras it's hard to tell when someone is recording you...

Once again I am caught on YouTube (without my consent or knowledge)... But, since someone went through all of the hard work to get it there I might as well share it with you... This is from last weeks Computex Tradeshow in Taiwan for SanDisk. The clip picks-up half way through the presentation, but you'll get the idea...

My only fear is that one of these days a camera is going to catch me in one of those rare instances where a trick doesn't go as planned, or I have a real tough audience (or a costume malfunction)... Until then I'm happy to share my serendipitous fame with YouTube :-)
